Chapter 3

The following morning, I headed downstairs in my scrubs. This morning I had to deliver some paperwork and my timesheet to Nancy’s office, and then I was going to make a quick stop at the store, buy a few groceries, and a few more bandaging supplies at the local pharmacy to take care of Jax’s incision.

I had finally convinced him to let me re-bandage it earlier this morning. It was healing nicely, but he still refused to adhere to my gentle reminders to go easy on the weight bearing exercises. The physical therapist was supposed to come in the next couple of days, and I’m sure that she expected much the same attitude from him, in which case she would likely “cease-and-desist” her efforts as formerly warned.

Jax didn’t seem that concerned. It was only when I reminded him that she had to sign off on his therapy, and that his unit chief would probably need confirmation that he had completed therapy and was one-hundred percent before he was allowed back into his unit that he seem to have second thoughts. I had no idea if this was true, but it seemed as if he didn’t either, so the little white lie might serve him some good.

I had just reached the bottom of the stairs and was prepared to turn to the kitchen, where I was going to grab the keys to the gray sedan, when I heard the knock on the door. Because my thoughts were on the errands I would be running, I forgot Jax’s warning about opening the door without his approval. I quickly peeked through the peep hole, saw a woman standing on the doorstep, and thought perhaps the physical therapist had come early. I quickly keyed in the alarm deactivation code and then opened the front door.

“Hi,” I said. The woman standing in front of me wore nice clothes—a little too nice for a physical therapist to wear to a session. Crisp tan linen slacks, black pumps, a red, sleeveless and low necked silk blouse, and a large number of silver and gold bangles on each wrist. Her long, fire engine red fingernails clutched a Gucci bag. Long brunette hair in luxurious waves dropped over her shoulders. Her face was sharply defined and her bone structure exquisite, and I felt a tinge of envy. Perfectly arched eyebrows, luscious eyelashes, and gorgeous hazel eyes. Unfortunately, the only thing that detracted from her beauty was the slight frown she wore on her lips.

In fact, the way she gave me a once over, her look slightly disapproving, if I had interpreted the slight smirk on her face as she took in my shapeless dark blue scrubs correctly, annoyed me. She inspected my crocs and then brought her gaze back up to my face, assessing.

She wasn’t the physical therapist.

“May I help you?” I asked.

“And just who might you be?” she asked. “Where’s Jackson?”

“Stephanie!”

I glanced over my shoulder to see Jax making his way down the bottom third of the stairs.
